Certified Government Financial Manager The Pathway to Certification
Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM) is the mark of excellence in your profession. The CGFM is the first certification broad enough to cover the whole field of government financial management - federal, state and local. Currently, there are over 14,000 members who received this designation and is recognized as a professional standard by some states. The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Board of Regents has also recognized the CGFM certification. It has been accepted as a waiver for Part IV of the CIA examination.

Education Requirements. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, and completion of at least 24 semester credit hours (or 36 quarter credit hours) of study in specific related courses of study in one or more of the following areas: · Accounting · Auditing · Budgeting · Economics · Electronic Data Processing · Finance · Information Resources Management · Public Administration · Other Financial Management or Related Topics
Experience Requirement. At least two years of professional-level experience in government financial management that involves government financial management at a professional level in federal, state or local government, the private sector, or academia and encompass one or more of the following areas: · Financial · Accounting · Audit · Information Technology · Instruction · Other experience in government financial management that the Professional Certification Board deems acceptable.
To Apply for the CGFM Program. 1. Read the AGA’s Code of Ethics 2. Fill out and submit the CGFM Application Form, including a nonrefundable application fee of $85. 3. Fax or mail to AGA the required degree documentation (see Education requirement above). Note: this documentation must be submitted within six months of submitting the application form. 4. Fax or mail the CGFM Work Verification Form (not required at time of application, but is required before the CGFM can be awarded). If you already have the required experience, submit this form at the time of application.

To Maintain Certification. · Pay the CGFM renewal fee by the due date every year. · Complete at least 80 hours of continuing professional education (CPE) every two years in government financial management topics or related technical subjects. · Maintain and, if requested by AGA, provide detailed information on CPE hours completed.
